The stoning of St. Spez's bear. Desert fathers St. Spez, St. Eutizio, and St. Fiorenzo relocated to the mountains of Umbria to begin their respective work creating a Christian community. St. Fiorenzo chose the life of a hermit becoming so close with nature that he made friends with a bear. The bear would take sheep out to pasture for him as well as keep St. Fiorenzo company. Less holy monks in the area became covetous of the bear friend and one day stoned it to death while St. Fiorenzo was away picking asparagus. Though a holy man, St. Fiorenzo was hurt to find his bear dead and took to cursing those hateful monks. In the end the sinister monks we stricken with leprosy and died. St. Fiorenzo recanted this malediction and returned to his holy meditation.
